Comprehensive cardiovascular services

Fort Hamilton Hospital offers sophisticated technology and an experienced, caring staff to keep your heart healthy and intervene when illness strikes. In addition to performing more than 450 low-risk catheterization proceedures per year, we have also begun offering interventional cardiology services enabling our patients to receive more of their care close to home. Specifically, we are upgrading our existing cardiac catheterization lab and adding a second lab. This will enable us to introduce two leading-edge interventional procedures to our continuum of care -- coronary angioplasty and stent placement. Coronary angioplasty uses a balloon catheter to open a clogged artery. Stent placement involves placing a small device within the coronary artery to hold it open.

We realize that technology alone doesn’t ensure positive outcomes -- you also need highly trained physicians who specialize in diagnosing cardiac problems and performing interventional cardiac procedures. To this end, we are forming a collaborative relationship with a prominent area cardiology group. The group will provide Fort Hamilton Hospital with the experienced interventionists needed to provide our patients with high quality cardiac care close to home.

Our non-invasive diagnostic cardiac services include:

  • cardiac stress testing
  • echocardiography (EKG)
  • vascular imaging
  • electroencephalography (EEG)
  • personalized cardiac rehabilitation programs

Stress Testing

  • Traditional Cardiac Stress Testing- By using a treadmill or bike, we can record your heartbeat and test your heart strength.
  • Thallium Stress Testing- The use of a special contrast media allows us to monitor blood flow to the heart.
  • Pharmacological Stress Testing- For those who cannot walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike, this test uses medications to increase the heart rate so that we can check your heart health.

Echocardiography

In our echo lab, sound waves are used to generate images of the heart. This is a painless, non-invasive procedure performed by registered technologists, and is used primarily to look at heart valves and wall motion.

Vascular Lab

In our vascular lab, we use sound wave to image arteries and veins. This test detects blood clots, narrowing arteries and other circulatory disorders.

Holter Monitoring (24 hour EKG)

An EKG monitor is worn for a 24 hour period, during normal daily activities. At the end of the period, the data is examined by the physician. This test is used to indicate any cardiac abnormalities.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

The cardiac rehabilitation program at The Fort Hamilton Hospital helps cardiac patients who are recovering from surgery, chest pain, angioplasty and heart attacks. By following our education, exercise and support program, they can lead more active and healthier lives. We provide cardiac rehabilitation phases one and two, and phase three in partnership with the Great Miami Valley YMCA. Phase one occurs when the patient is still in the hospital , and is continuously monitored. Phases two and three include progressive exercise and fitness programs. The program is staffed by cardiac nurses, dietitians and exercise specialists. They provide direction and support in exercise, low-fat diets, stress reduction, smoking cessation and other healthful practices. The cardiac rehabilitation program is for patients recovering from coronary bypass surgery, angina (chest pain), angioplasty and heart attacks. Programs are customized to meet the needs of each patient.  back to top
